Hand-scale farming means that most if not all of the labor we are performing is energetically fueled by our human bodies rather than fossil fueled machinery. 

We do this to lower our fossil fuel inputs, to connect closely with the seeds, plants and soil, and to stay in touch with our physical bodies. We can design systems and use tools that fit with our bodies and are comfortable to use. We sized our beds to be comfortable to reach into, and our pathways as a good size for kneeling and crawling. We schedule our days to be as comfortable as possible, like taking a break from the afternoon heat and working early mornings and evenings.

Hand scale farming means that we strive to be intentional about designing our systems to work efficiently from planting, to harvesting to weeding. And it means calling for help with bigger projects when needed, keeping us connected to our friends, family, and community.
